Who Lost Afghanistan?

After the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers by Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda terrorists, our government moved rapidly to clean out the Taliban, who had given our attackers sanctuary in Afghanistan. Our soldiers had them on the run.

That was to the credit of President Bush.

Had the president pursued the matter to its conclusion, wiping out our attackers and those who supported them, our nation would have sent a strong message to terrorists everywhere: Don't Tread On Us. That's what a strong leader would have done. That's what we expected.

What a shame that our president dropped the ball!

After our forces defeated the Taliban, drug lords took over most of the country and the puppet government set up by our country ruled only a small portion of the land -- and only during daylight hours.

The Taliban opposes the drug lords and is rapidily gaining strength once again. They now control large portions of Afghanistan, especially at night.

Because of the fool's errand President Bush took on in Iraq, we lack the forces to hold back our enemies in Afghanistan. The terrorists got a reprieve, and now see our country as irresolute and indecisive. That's just what Osama bin Laden said would happen.

What's so sad is that this scenario was completely predictable. In fact, there was not a single American citizen with common sense who did not see this coming a mile away. Too bad common sense does not reside in Washington, D.C.

The following facts underscore some important truths about our president:

1,685 days have now passed since since September 17, 2001, when President Bush pledged to take Osama bin Laden "dead or alive."

1,099 days have now passed since May 1, 2003, when President Bush gave his Iraq "mission accomplished" speech.

10 U.S. soldiers killed in Afghan copter crash

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A CH-47 Chinook helicopter has crashed during a combat operation in Afghanistan, killing all 10 U.S. soldiers on board, a military spokeswoman said Saturday.

...

The aircraft was on a mission in support of Operation Mountain Lion, an offensive to root out Taliban and al Qaeda militants near the mountainous border with Pakistan, The Associated Press reported.

More than four and one-half years after 9/11, our attackers are still at large. Simply unacceptable.

With our troops bogged down in Iraq, the Taliban are more and more active in Afghanistan: Afghan Clashes Kill 25 Taliban, Canadian Soldier in Kandahar.

May 18 (Bloomberg) -- Clashes in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province killed at least 25 Taliban members and a Canadian soldier, the coalition military said. Separately, 13 Afghan policemen and 30 Taliban fighters died in violence in Helmand province, the British Broadcasting Corp. said.

Too bad we face these challenges with a foolish weakling as our president.

Taliban Kill Seven Soldiers in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 20 (AP) — Militants hiding in a vineyard and armed with machine guns ambushed an Afghan Army convoy on Saturday, shooting dead four soldiers, said Gen. Rehmatullah Raufi, military commander for the south, while two French soldiers and an American were reported killed in fighting elsewhere.

The American soldier was killed Friday in Oruzgan Province, also in the south, the military said in a statement. Lt. Tamara Lawrence, a military spokeswoman, said American troops were conducting a joint patrol with Afghan forces when they encountered enemy fighters about 10 a.m. Friday. Six other American soldiers were injured.

While our soldiers are bogged down in Iraq, a nation that did not attack us, bin Laden and his Taliban supporters have made use of the respite to regroup against us. Gee thanks, Dubya!
